Solution 1: One solution is to try running the Questock 2.0 without loading the interface. To do so, expand the Creative Freedom window directly after loading the disc into your CD ROM drive. Open the "Other Items" folder and double-click the "Questock 2.0" Icon. You will save an additional 4 Mb of RAM.
Solution 2: If you still have memory errors, you can simulate additional RAM (at least 32 Mb) by using "Virtual Memory", located in the "Memory" Control Panel.
Solution 3: Another solution is to run your system with fewer Extensions and Control Panels. Having too many Extensions and Control Panels running can not only take up extra system memory and cause conflicts and system errors, it will also slow your computer down. However, it is necessary that the following are left in your System Folder:
Quicktime
Foreign File Access
CD ROM Driver Software (Depending on your CD ROM Drive brand)
and any Printer Driver selected in your Chooser
Ñ Printer driver error message:
Solution: The catalog may not open if a printer driver is not selected. Even if you do not have a printer connected to your computer, the Questock 2.0 Browser needs access to a printer driver. To choose a printer driver: under the Apple menu, open the Chooser and select a printer and a port. If no printer drivers and ports are listed, you will need to move one into your Extensions folder from another location. (The System Software installation discs should contain them.)
Ñ System hangs when you click "Display":
Solution: Go to the Search dialog window and make sure that "Equals" is highlighted in the center box.
Ñ Not getting the right images:
Solution: Check your settings in the Search dialog window. The window may seem complex and sophisticated at first, but it can be a powerful editing tool if used correctly. The first things to check are the pull down menu items: 'Count, Display, Mark, Select;' 'Search Entire Catalog, Search Displayed List, Add to Displayed List;' 'And, Or, But Not.' The most commonly used items will be in blue. Feel free to experiment, but only change the pull down menus to the red ones if you know or want to know what they do.
Ñ System slows down while scrolling through images:
Solution: Change the popup menu at the bottom left corner of the thumbnail window to "Available Memory." Doing so will purge the RAM that the browser is not using. The search engine works best when it has at least 32 Mb of RAM, but can work on machines with less. Also try using some of the tips mentioned under "Memory Problems."
Ñ Program Error on double-clicking images in Questock 2.0:
Solution: If you are having trouble previewing images in Questock 2.0, then run the QuickTime¬ 3.0 Installer. First generation PowerMacs (6100, 7100, and 8100's) that are running System 7.5.3 or higher need QuickTime 3.0 in order to preview images. The installer is located on the disc in the folder called "System Update." note-You may have problems if you install Quicktime 3.0 onto a system that doesn't have at least System 7.5.3.
Ñ Running "Start Here╔" gives you a "QuickTimeLib" error message:
Solution: You will either need to reactivate QuickTime (and QuickTime Power Plug if you are using a PowerMac) and restart, or run the Apple¬ QuickTime¬ 3.0 installer included on the CD then restart. QuickTimeLib is a part of QuickTime.
Ñ Images don't enlarge properly in Portfolio:
Solution: If you are receiving an error message from Portfolio when trying to preview an image by double-clicking on it, you need to move "Mac OS Easy Open" (or "Macintosh Easy Open" for older system versions) back into your Control Panels folder and restart your computer. You should be able to return it by checking it in your Extensions Manager control panel, otherwise you will need to re-install it from your System Software CD.
Ñ Enlarged images come up as random pixels:
Solution: Close the image window and open it again. The image should appear correctly the second time you double-click on it.
Ñ Need a faster display speed:
Solution: Copying the 'Questock 2.0' catalog to your hard drive will give you a significant performance boost. From the Finder, load the CD into the drive. Expand the window to reveal the 'Other Items' folder. Inside of that folder is the "Questock 2.0" catalog file. Copy that file and the Questock Browser application to your hard drive. Double-click on the file on your drive. You will notice an immediate speed increase when the images are being painted on the screen. If you want to see the comp size images while searching, leave the CD in the drive so that the catalog can access it.
The type of processor you have will also greatly influence performance. For instance, Power PC based Macs will be much faster than 68k Macs (non-Power Macs).
Installing the music to your hard drive will also increase the speed of changing screens and searching for images while music is on.
Ñ Trouble loading the "Information Resource":
Solution: If you are having a problem running the Information Resource, try running the ACROREAD.MAC installation routine to install Acrobat¬ Reader 3.0 on your hard drive. The installation utility is located in the 'Information Resource' folder on this CD. Once you have run the installer and restarted your computer as per the installer's instructions, you will simply be able to double-click on the 'Information Resource' icon or click on any of the 'Information Resource' buttons.
Ñ Text on information pages is pixelated:
Solution: Make sure that you have the Helvetica font installed in the Fonts folder inside of your System Folder. If it is not there, you can install it from your System Software disks or CD.
Ñ Searching for images by number:
If you have found an image in the print catalog and want to find its comp file on the CD, you can use the Catalog Image Number field. Look at the number below the image in the printed catalog and use that number in the Catalog Image Number field to find the image.
Ñ Uninstalling music:
To free up the space used by the music files, open your System Folder. Open the "Preferences" folder and delete the files named "~Handel - Water Music", etc.
